X Reader Interactive Story Apps: The Newcomer Guide (2026)

By Reid Callahan, trope reviewer · Last checked October 2026

X reader fiction writes you into the story as the main character, using second person and a blank-slate name. This guide explains the format, then ranks the five apps where x-reader style stories thrive and what each costs to read.

The format, decoded

X reader, written "x reader" or "xreader", is fanfiction shorthand for a story where a character, the x, is paired with you, the reader. The prose runs in second person: "he looks at you", "you reach for him". Your name is often a bracketed placeholder, [Y/N] for "your name", left blank so anyone can slot themselves in. One-shots run a single scene; longfics run novel length. The pleasure of the format is total immersion: there is no heroine to compare yourself to, because the heroine is you.

Finding the good stuff

When you outgrow [Y/N]

The bracket placeholder is the format's biggest weakness: a blank where a person should be breaks longfic immersion. The interactive apps solve it in two ways. Cast-you stories give you a face and a name while keeping the second person. Steered stories go further: you supply the personality in your own words and the prose adapts to it, which is as close to being written into a book as the format gets.
